MitraClip
MitraClip is a catheter-based, minimally invasive therapy used to treat mitral valve regurgitation, a condition where the mitral valve fails to seal completely, allowing blood to leak backwards with each heartbeat. This backward flow can trigger breathlessness, fatigue, swelling, and eventually heart failure. MitraClip offers an alternative to open-heart surgery, making it ideal for patients who are considered high-risk for conventional surgical repair. Under the care of Dr Umesh Akkalkotkar, Senior Consultant & Interventional Cardiologist at N.M. Wadia Institute of Cardiology, Pune, patients receive advanced, evidence-based MitraClip therapy with consistently successful outcomes.
What is MitraClip?
MitraClip involves delivering a small clip through a thin catheter inserted from a vein in the groin. Once at the heart, the device grasps and brings the mitral valve leaflets together, reducing the leak and restoring forward blood flow.
Procedure Overview: The entire process is guided using echocardiography and fluoroscopy to ensure precision. Performed under anaesthesia or conscious sedation, MitraClip typically takes 1–2 hours.
Key Features: Suitable for severe degenerative or functional mitral regurgitation, particularly in elderly patients or those with kidney disease, lung disease, or other comorbidities.
Applications: Recommended for patients who are not candidates for surgical valve repair or replacement.
